Season 1999-2000

The Heineken Cup grew to 24 clubs with the return of the English and the pool stage was spread over three months to allow the competition to develop alongside the nations' own domestic competitions, and the knockout stage was scheduled to take the tournament into the early spring.

There were six pools of four for the first time and clubs from four different nations - England, Ireland, France and Wales - made it through to the semi-finals also for the first time. Munster's sensational defeat of Toulouse in Bordeaux ended France's record of having contested every final.

It was the launch of Munster's love-affair with the tournament as they reached the first of their four finals to date. More than 68,000 tickets were sold in only three weeks for their Twickenham Stadium shoot-out with Northampton Saints. The Saints became the third English club to reach the final after their dramatic 31-28 semi-final victory over Llanelli.

Even though David Wallace became the first forward to score a try in the Heineken Cup final, it was the boot of Paul Grayson that propelled NORTHAMPTON SAINTS to a 9-8 triumph.
