Season 1998-99

It wasn't just Irish eyes that were smiling at the end of the third season following an unforgettable occasion at Lansdowne Road on 30 January 1999. Even without any English clubs, who opted out of the tournament for a season, the action was so compelling that the first Dublin final is still talked about to this day.

French clubs filled top spots in three of the pools but this was to be ULSTER'S greatest triumph in their history as they beat Toulouse (twice) and the then reigning French champions, Stade Francais Paris, on their way to a fairytale final in Dublin.

A crowd of 49,000 paid IR£700,000 to watch a match for which the 'Sold out' signs had gone up 10 days earlier. It seemed as though the whole of Belfast had headed south with signs on the main routes out of the city asking if the 'last person out will turn off the lights'.

Simon Mason kicked 18 points and skipper David Humphreys dropped a goal that clinched a 21-6 win over Colomiers on what was one of Irish sport's most memorable days.
